Indigo and its blue revolutions!

The immensely popular blue jeans owe a major portion of its popularity to the versatile blue color, indigo. Indigo dye, originally sourced from plants belonging to Indigofera and Isatis genera, has been in use as early as 6000 years ago, as revealed by excavations from an archaeological site at Peru. Closer to home, excavations from the Indus Valley civilisation unearthed seeds of four different species of Indigofera plant and a blue dyed cloth material. Large scale production of indigo started in India in the late 16th century by the East India Company. The oppressive practices around the cultivation and production of indigo led to several people’s movements including the famous Indigo Revolt of 1859 in Bengal. This STEAMboat session will dwell upon the history of this blazing dye, its industrial synthesis and dyeing procedure.

मिलेट्स का महोत्सव

हिरवे शिकारी अर्थात मांसाहारी वनस्पती

मांसाहारी म्हटलं कि फक्त प्राणी विश्व् डोळ्यासमोर येतं पण उत्क्रांतीच्या जटील टप्प्यांमध्ये काही वनस्पतीसुद्धा मांसभक्षी बनल्या. सूक्ष्म किडे कीटक पासून ते अगदी लहान बेडूक, सरडे खाण्यापर्यंत यांनी मजल मारलेली आहे. पण या वनस्पती मुबलक प्रमाणात दिसून येत नाहीत. इतर वनस्पती तग धरणार नाहीत अशा ठिकाणी यांचा अधिवास आहे. जागेवरून न हलता शिकार करण्यासाठी वैशिष्ट्यपूर्ण सापळे विकसित केलेले आहेत. शिकार पचवण्यासाठी लागणारा पाचकरस बनवण्याची करामत यांनी साधली आहे. चला तर जाणून घेऊ यांची मनोरंजक जडणघडण!

प्रकाश नसलेल्या जगात जगणे कसे असेल याचा तुम्ही कधी विचार केला आहे का? प्रकाश हा आपल्या जीवनाचा एक अविभाज्य भाग बनला आहे.. चला तर मग STEAMboat च्या या सत्रात, प्रकाश व त्याचे नियम, प्रकाशीय उपकरणे, तसेच प्रकाशीय तत्वाचा उपयोग कुठे आणि कसा करतात यावर चर्चा करू या. तसेच प्रकाशाच्या तत्वार आधारित काही खेळणी (Optical toys) व त्यामागील विज्ञान जाणून घेऊ. आरशांद्वारे मिळणाऱ्या प्रतिमा आणि प्रतिमेचे स्वरूप याविषयीची अधिक माहिती प्रत्यक्ष प्रयोगातून घेऊ.
